Harmonics in J.B. Accolay Violin Concerto

This is my approach to the harmonics in measures 68, 65 and 37. I’m going in reverse because I think 68 is easiest and 37 is hardest. The music isn’t needed though, the concept of having the hand in 3rd position with the 4th finger extended is the point I’m attempting to make. Thanks for watching!

Fiorillo Violin Etude #32 for Texas’ Region Orchestra Auditions TUTORIAL Help

This is a discussion of the Fiorillo Etude/Caprice #32. I’m using the International Music Company (IMC) publication, edited by Ivan Galamian (catalog #2178). Please note: the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) says this should be performed at 46-54 to the quarter note. They also stipulate that measures 7 and 15 should be played Bb instead of the printed B natural.

This Violin Was a Gift - Performing Irish Fiddle Tunes

This instrument was given to me by a good friend, and was made by an American maker in the early 1990s. I’ve been playing on it, and noticing how it’s changing and developing. I’m playing four traditional Irush tunes in a set; Tom Morrison’s/The Beare Island/George White’s Favourite/Dipping the Sheep.

Good tutorial! And wow, it's HARD to count out loud while still playing with beautiful sound!
Thank you, Alison!
I can do a slow wide vibrato and fast tight one but the sweet spot is alluding me. I’ve done months of metronome practice and I can’t seem to penetrate that stumbling block
You might try mixing up your approach. My hand/wrist vibrato was always slow, but it was the one I learned as a child. I had more success with speed when I added arm vibrato. I mix the two now for different effects. For your tight vibrato, see if you can get more flexibility in the first knuckle. You can also start with the finger contact point deeper into the pad and not on the extreme fingertip. This should cause a wider oscillation. Also, if you can’t get the slower vibrato to go any faster, try placing your finger on the extreme fingertip to reduce the width. It won’t speed up your reflexes but it’ll reduce the distance of the oscillation, and might give you a better result. Try those things, and any other techniques you might devise. I like placing the scroll against the wall for added support, which frees up your hand. If you’re creative and persistent you’ll get something you like. Best wishes!
Cool video, thanks!
Are bows with a full metal frog mount always higher level than bows with a plain frog and no metal mount? Is it correct to assume generally that a bow with a fully metal mounted frog is better than one without metal mounting on the frog?
The bows that have a metal ferrule, then the slide, followed by a final metal mounting that wraps around the bottom to the back are of a higher quality than bows that just follow the slide with a wood corner. I did own a French carbon fiber bow without the metal plate, but it was unusual, and slanted at the end. Highly stylized. Not a bad bow at all.
Hi professor, I was thinking if thumb placement the issue impeding the vibrato. I experimented vibrato without placing my thumb on the violin neck and I can vibrate freely than when I placed my thumb. I believe thumb placement can be a reason.
Yes, I agree that thumb tension can hinder the flow of the vibrato. Practicing with the thumb off can give you a real sense of freedom, as long as you’re able to keep the head and shoulder relaxed. Try placing your scroll against the wall while doing this. It will give you a little support. After you get a good finger motion, try adding the thumb. Don’t squeeze, just cradle the neck. It can sometimes help the place the thumb under the neck, at least at first. It’s harder to get the “death grip “ with the thumb under the neck. Then you can experiment with different thumb placements to find a good balance, able to reach all four fingers, and avoid the squeeze. Keep the scroll against the wall until it becomes a habit. Good luck!
Sen mükemmelsin teşekkür ederim ❤🎉
Dear Instructor, please forgive my forgetting your.name. I will pass along a little secret as to how to keep left thumb from choking violin neck. I sit on inexpensive piano bench next to my Huffy mountain bike. The right hand grip makes a great support for the violin neck and I can then relax my thumb because my violin is supported by collar bone and right handlebar grip. I support it just below the cats tongue on the scroll. I then use the remaining 4 fingers to do their job in a light natural manner. It works for me. Hope this helps! Do be careful not to put undue pressure on the scroll or the.neck will snap! Happy leisurely vibrato! Enjoy!😅
Thanks professor V. I have large hands, but extremely tiny pinkies. It challenges me to no end. But I’m determined to master the violin, so at least I can play at an acceptable level in open mics and jam sessions. You have a new subscriber…..I’m gonna try this technique.

Oh wow! I’ve watched your videos on youtube many years ago when I was still much younger and today I found your channel again, now that I am on my new youtube account! Glad to have found your channel again and that you’re still on youtube!
So nice to hear from you! I appreciate your kind comments very much. Best regards, Todd
नमस्कार सर, भारतीयांकडून खूप खूप प्रेम. तुम्ही माझ्यासाठी दैवी आहात❤❤❤❤❤
Amazing. I couldnt find any helpful info on UA-cam about how to play fifths well, basically people were just saying “practice until you get it right.” This was new information
He starts playing at 2:18.
I started learning how to play the violin by watching your videos back in 2008. I was 16 years old then, with zero musical experience and knowledge. Throughout the years, I've completed multiple graded violin exams and joined various community orchestras. Eventually, I completed my music degree and pursued a career in the music industry. Today, I'm a full-time violin teacher myself, and also a freelance music composer. Every now and then I will come back to this channel to remind myself how I've started. It warms my heart to see that you are still posting videos even after 16 years. I'll always remember you as my first music teacher ever, the one who jump-started my musical journey. I wouldn't be where I am today if it weren't for you. Thank you so much, from the bottom of my heart ♥
That’s so great! Thank you for sharing this with me. It’s a genuine honor to be part of your story. Todd
I feel like I having some kind of curse because I can hold anything like a violin on my shoulder and all my fingers can do anything independently and effortlessly but as long as I hold a violin my pinky get so much tension and it become hard to move and my 1st can't hold on the fret when trying to move the pinky. By the way If I hold the violin up side down (string face downward back face upward my fingers magically play free again. This problem bug me for years and I just can't progress my playing. Still looking for a solution but no luck.
That’s obviously frustrating. If you hold it like a guitar, is your left hand free and relaxed ? When you put your violin on your shoulder, try supporting the violin with your right hand (without bow), but don’t put your head on the chinrest. Keep your head straight and relaxed. Does your left hand still feel “free?”If so, put your head on the chinrest, but make sure to keep your left shoulder relaxed and down. Anything change? Now, start playing. Does your shoulder go up and get tense? You could trap a nerve over time. If not, concentrate on the amount of tension you have in your thumb, and how hard you press on the strings. Perhaps you can locate a source of tension, and then work to reduce it. It’s possible the just rotating your shoulder and arm pinches a nerve somewhere. Anyway, I wish you well and hope you can find a solution.
@@professorV First of all thanks for your fast reply. I suspect that has something to do with the string tension or I am pressing too much than necessary so I decide to take off all the strings few days ago and practice just like that, not sure if that help but time will tell. It just ridiculous my fingers are all free to move any way they want without tension no matter what posture I do even sleep on the floor or sit on the chair with my leg on the computer table or simply any "wrong" postures that are not recommended for any violinist but as long as I hold the violin with a proper posture suddenly my pinky has such tension come from no where and become lame. By the way I do play guitar and having the same problem too. Let me know if I can upload a 1m video into my channel for you to have a look to better understand my problem. Thanks in advance.
You’re a genius! This totally worked. In 2 minutes.🎉🎉. Thank you!

dear Mr. Elle, I tryed whittling a toothpick for indication of tense distal flanges, and I lost the toothpick. It held fine as long as I was tense but then scooted. I'm finding that this aid might not be the best for me. It.seems to me an elderly woman had it right; and that was in order to have a loose vibrato one must have a decent shoulder rest in order for the thumb to take a vacation and not choke the neck. I was chided for choking my violin neck as a child and may have a complex hovering around this issue. I think slight backward pull to each distal joint a better loosening procedure for me. I believe Wallace Richey has some good gymnastics that can an will add suppleness to my left hand. Thank you for trying this toothpick idea, maybe I'm doing it wrong. Very greatful for your efforts to engage a fluid vibrato for students. Very much appreciated. Looking forward to more as you are able. Yours, chris in u.s.2year student 40 years ago. I gave up because of too much pressure to read music. I wish now I hadn't given up, but I must learn slowly, the hard way. Bye for now.😅
Tension is a real problem for every, and sometimes trying harder makes it worse. The point of this video is to show where the motion in the finger comes from. Take a look at this old video and see if it helps. Best of luck! ua-cam.com/video/GmO15N6T9eg/v-deo.htmlsi=T0ZlEKE9LHCl0tAy
Thank you so much. Your videos are so valuable!! Watching in 2024.
Thanks, wartyfrog!
thanks for this reassurance about thumb placement. I have a good teacher who advises me that the neck of the violin should rest on my thumb which is under the neck but I do sometimes have it point toward the scroll. I have very small hands so will try to move my arm as well to achieve the curved pinky. Glad I found this video today.
Ya know! That seems like an extremely good indicator of tense vibrato! I have not tryed it yet. Might a wooden match stick also work? Or I shall have to whittle my own tooth pick. You Sir are a genius! At least it might possibly serve as an indicator of loose and or tense vibrato. I hope to try this very soon. Thank you!😅
